I’d like to introduce you to Blake, this beautiful and bright-eyed baby boy that I had the honour of photographing recently. Blake was born seven days past his due date, and when he, his mother and big brother came to my studio for a newborn photography session, he was eight days old and weighed nearly 9lbs!
About five years ago, I had the pleasure of meeting this beautiful baby boy’s mother. We were classmates at the Ontario Self Employment Benefit program. I was delighted when she contacted me for newborn photography, as it was the chance to not only reconnect with her but to also take some pictures of this lovely little family.
As I mentioned, Blake’s big brother also attended the session. I think it’s pretty obvious that this 15-year-old is proud to be a big brother. The images capture his adoration quite well, don’t you think?
Every once in a while, with newborn photography, you have a baby who is very alert despite the fact that they’re only days old. Typically, babies Blake’s age spend most of their time sleeping or in and out of sleep. Blake was one of those babies, however, that was intent on watching me as I worked and only really gave in to sleep after a great deal of soothing. Still, I was able to capture some beautiful portraits of this wide-eyed, inquisitive little boy.
My session with Blake and his family reminded me of how unique each session is and that you’ve got to be able to adapt and adjust to baby’s cues. I think the images we captured also portray just how easy it is to customize newborn photography. Photos of babies with siblings, parents, different outfits and props make portraits one of a kind and just that much more meaningful.
