While working in the Toronto baby photography industry, I’ve had the opportunity to meet some pretty special families. Sweet baby Lola, along with her mother and father, are one such family that I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know quite well, as they’ve visited my studio five times in the last two years for baby photography sessions. Lola’s parents, like many others, wish to document their daughter’s development throughout her first year with professional baby photography.
Baby Photography in the First Year
The first year of life is miraculous, to say the least. At no other point in their lives will an individual’s physical appearance change, or will they develop as many new abilities or skills, as they do in their first year. I can remember how excited I was with every new thing my own daughter learned to do, while at the same time feeling a bit sad that my baby was growing and changing so quickly. It really is true when people say not to blink, because before you know it, your beautiful baby is walking, talking and going to school.
I’ve never regretted my decision to capture my daughter’s changing looks, growing personality and newly-developed skills, and I know that any of the families who have hired me for Toronto baby photography feel the same.
Preserving the First Year’s Many Milestones with Toronto Baby Photography
What’s the first thing parents do when their baby smiles for the first time or takes their first step? Runs for their camera! All parents should take pictures of their babies–and lots of them–as they grow, but there is something to be said for professional baby photography and its ability to capture the smallest of details in the best way possible. While some parents are quite adept at taking great shots of their kids, the quality of the images never compare to those taken by a professional who owns the right equipment and knows how to use it.
This lovely collection of images I’ve included here, in this post, was taken during a session we did when little Lola was 6 months old. Although she wasn’t yet sitting on her own, we wanted to capture her beautiful smile and put her playful personality front and centre, and so I supported her with a special baby photography prop so we could take pictures of her sitting up.
There are many ways you can choose to document your child’s first year through baby photography, the easiest of which is with a first year photography plan. With this photography plan, you can attend your first baby photography session when your little one is a newborn, and schedule repeat visits to the studio when your baby reaches new milestones like sitting, crawling, walking, and of course, excitedly ‘smashing’ their first birthday cake! Personalizing Your First Year Photography
When you visit my studio for baby photography in the first year, you will have the chance to personalize your child’s portraits by choosing from a large assortment of props and accessories. I have so much fun accessorizing the sessions with furniture, prints and rugs. Just look at the fun props we chose to use in Lola’s portraits; a zebra print chair with pink trim, which matched the pink background and zebra print mini carpet we placed under the chair. To add a little texture to the image, I also placed sheepskin fabric on the back of the chair.
While I don’t like to go over the top because I think the focus of the portrait should be on the baby and their expressions, it is fun, especially with little girls, to add a few accessories. Tutus, necklaces and rompers do add to the overall cute factor, don’t you think?

Bringing Out the Best of Your Baby’s Expressions, at Every Stage
Just like all of the other changes that take place over the course of your baby’s first year, their expressions will also change. From the sleepy smiles of newborns to the big toothy grins of babies on the cusp of their first birthdays, you’re going to want to preserve those smiles–and maybe even frowns–in your child’s portraits.
As your photographer, it’s my job to capture the best of your baby’s expressions in the images I take. I’ve been known to do just about anything to make a baby smile and giggle, from jumping up and down or dancing, to playing peek-a-boo and squeaking rubber duckies. Every baby is different and adapting to their needs and finding something that brings about one of those irresistible expressions is key. With each of the sessions that take place during your child’s first year, we’ll be sure to document those expressions that make your child unique, from silly smiles and funny faces to the inquisitive looks little crawlers give when they’re on the hunt for something to get into, or the sheer excitement on the face of a one-year-old who’s set to dig into a frosting covered cake.
